Legal Entity Identifier, also known as LEI Code or LEI number, is a unique international registration number for legal entities. An LEI is mandatory for legal entities such as companies, funds, associations and organizations that make transactions on European transactional markets. All LEI Codes are based on the ISO 17442 standard and includes both letters and numbers. The use of Legal Entity Identifier makes it possible for relevant authorities to identify the different parties in a transaction.
The requirement of Legal Entity Identifier comes from EU directives such as MiFIR, MIFID II and EMIR. The requirement came into place in 2018 with the aim to make a more transparent and stable global financial market.
